How to Plan the Cubic Decimeter Sides
It is time to make a plan.  This plan will require you to draw two exact squares on one sheet of graph paper. These two squares are congruent.

Congruent means they are identical in shape and size.

The measurement of the square you will  draw and cut is 10cm X 10cm.  This square is the same as one square decimeter. (1
dm² )

Go back to the graph paper photo. Note that there are two squares drawn. The corner red dots are exactly 10cm apart on a graph line. This graph line is one decimeter long. This type of measuring is called linear measurement.

You are ready to draw the square decimeter. Remember that when you measure a line on graph paper, you must count from zero.

You should draw your lines before gluing the 1cm grid paper to the boxboard.

I usually draw my lines before gluing because I could make a mistake.

If I make a major mistake, I recycle the paper and start again.

Planning, calculating and drawing this project carefully also means drawing the lines on the  page so that you can cut out   two of the six 1
dm² . This will save you time and material.

You will need a good ruler to connect the points and draw a straight line. I used different colored markers so that I can clearly and precisely explain the plan.

I would advise you to use a pencil and pencil crayons. Remember, you can erase a pencil line if you make a mistake.

You cannot erase a marker or a pen. I had many students who used pencil crayons and were successful.

Start your plan by laying out  the 12cm X 12cm black dots.  Laying out means setting out the starting points on your page.

These dots will give you the correct amount of space between your two square decimeters.

Find the correct points and mark them with a pencil. They must be exactly  12cm apart. There should be a minimum of 3cm between each square.

Inside the 12cm X 12cm space, draw the 10cm X 10cm square. The red dots, 10cm apart, form the final square.

The black lines on the inside will be used later to align the masking tape that will hold the corners of your cube.

These black lines should be drawn with a black pencil crayon. You will see why later as we complete and decorate our cube.
