Preparing to Draw

            Preparing to Draw
Before beginning drawing Cubee “D”, you  will  need a  drawing board, masking tape, pencil, pencil crayons, (black, red, blue and yellow), pencil sharpener,   ruler, a 5 cm soft paint brush, not necessary but very helpful in keeping the surface clean.

An orthographic and isometric template,a clean, blank, white 23cm X 48cm sheet of paper.
                          The Drawing Board
A drawing board provides a flat, portable drawing surface. A good, light, inexpensive drawing board can be made from one eighth inch thick material, called Masonite also known as hardboard.

Because I scan my drawings, this drawing board is the same size as the drawing paper I use to draw on.

The surface of drawing board can be cleaned with a dry cloth but should never be washed. Washing will, over time, decay the hardness and smoothness of the drawing surface.

            The Orthographic and Isometric Template
This piece of standard twenty eight by forty three centimeter paper is a drawing template. The template is used to draw a cubic decimeter orthographically, (front, top and side view) and isometrically, (three views connected together; a type of perspective drawing). It is secured to the drawing board at each corner with masking tape.

                         Drafting Paper
Drafting paper is carefully aligned and placed on the template. It is held in position using small pieces of carefully cut masking tape. These small pieces of masking tape secure the paper to the template and the board.

Artists, architects, engineers and designers, use this paper on the board to design and communicate ideas. When I draw a final plan, I use drafting film which, as you can see, is a very transparent material. My scanner did not have a problem scanning through the film and outlining the template.

                     Drafting Paper
Drafting film is expensive so we will be using large photocopy paper. As you can see, this paper is not as transparent as drafting film.

The only place my scanner picked up the drawing outline image under the paper was on the top, right side corner. You will not have a problem seeing the template.

Organize your drawing board, template and design paper, tape them in the correct sequence and you will be prepared to draw your first assignment, Drg. # 1, Cubee “D”.
